Twins Make Johan Santana a Weak Offer

Nearly three years ago, Johan Santana signed a four-year contract with the Minnesota Twins worth a measly $40 million. Now, in the final year of his contract, the club has reportedly offered to double Johan's salary with a five-year deal worth $93 million.

Is that enough for the best pitcher in baseball? Not on the open market, it's not. But it's all the Twins can afford. In the midst of a free agent mess in Minnesota, how badly Johan wants to stick around the Twins Cities area will be apparent if he accepts this proposition.

Santana went 15-13 with the struggling Twins offense this year, posting a 3.33 ERA and 235 strikeouts. He is a career 93-44 with a 3.22 ERA in eight seasons, all with the Twins.

Author's note: I love the Twins and I love Johan Santana. Please, please, please, please Baby Jesus, let this deal go down.

When I saw $93 million, I thought AWESOME! But then I saw the five-year part of the deal and my stomach sank. He deserves so much more than that. Like, double that.

Johan will never accept that offer. Weak is not even the word, Suzy.

I assume you're referring to Torii Hunter here along with the imminent departure of Joe Nathan. I think the Twins have a better chance at signing Hunter than they do of getting Johan to accept anything less than $150mill/5yr deal.

I see this offer as a starting point to get negotiations started. If Johan REALLY wants to stay and doesn't like this offer, then maybe he would ask them to add a year or 2 plus possibly 20-40 million more making it a possible 6-7 year deal for 113-133 range putting him around 19 mil. per/year - a price range where everyone is expecting him to get.. (at least 20 per/year). This is a deal I think the Twins would except. I don't think Johan is greedy and is WANTING 30 million per/year.

if Mariano gets $15 million for 3 outs, Johan deserves more than $93 mil for 5 years...

If this is brinkmanship by the Twins, I wish them very good luck...

Mariano is also with the big dollar Yankees. Also for 15 million a year for 3 outs is ridiculous...way too much. For the Twins to be making an offer like this is a different look from past years. If this rumor is true then I think Bill Smith is on the right path for the Twins. Obviously if this is the first offer, it is expected to be somewhat low. Hopefully Santana says he wants another year for a little bit more money and BOOM the Twins sign the best pitcher in baseball.

Welcome to Carl Pohlad's dilemma. Be rich as hell and complain your baseball doesnt make money. Or be a "little less" poor and sign the core of your club. Pohlad is a jackass for a reason.
