You're Busted Pal! (updated)

Deadspin commenter Tuffy makes an interesting point during their Game 7 Live Blog: "Do we have to root for the Red Sox so God doesn't have to choose between His Rockies and Paul Byrd?"

Update: According to FoxSports.com, Byrd has admitted to taking HGH under a doctor's care to treat a tumor on his pituitary gland.
"I have not taken any hormone apart from a doctor's care and supervision," Byrd said.
And that's accurate because... Byrd said so.

According to the law enforcement source who spoke with the San Francisco newspaper on the condition of anonymity, two of Byrd's prescriptions for HGH were not written by a physician.

During his press conference just hours before Game 7 Sunday night, Byrd failed to give any details on his pituitary gland condition and why he needed to take the hormone for over 2 years.

A devout Christian, he did say that he managed to brave the temptation of cheating by taking only the prescribed dosage.

Original Story: Just 5 days after pitching the Cleveland Indians to a Game 4 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS, Paul Byrd has been outed in a timely manner by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Byrd, who will turn 37 this December, purchased close to $25,000 worth of human growth hormone between August 2002 and January 2005 from the Palm Beach Rejuvenation Center, a Florida anti-aging clinic.

According to his credit card statements, he bought roughly 1,000 vials of HGH and hundreds of syringes... but no Botox. There seems to be a connection between his lower ERA in 2002 and his first visit to the cheater pharmacy, but I just can't seem to put my finger on it.

However, since HGH was not a banned substance while Byrd was still receiving shipments, he didn't break any MLB rules.

Byrd, who is 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA this postseason, declined to comment.

Looks like someone at the Chron is a Sox fan! Any chance this will be a big enough distraction to give Cleveland a loss?

It's going to be a major distraction - the timing of the story's release was definitely shady.

From what I have heard he purchased his last HGH the week before MLB banned it. He has passed all his tests and it was not illegal to purchase HGH with a prescription at the time.

Stop being such a homer and actually look shit up if you're gonna blog.

ESPN.com

Read it then feel like total douches for blasting a dude with a tumor. Journalists are journlists because of something called responsibility, ethics, all those good things that bloggers lack.

Ah, thanks for the laugh guys.

Great timing in getting to comment before the post was ammended. I only wrote about what was reported by EVERY MAJOR NEWS OUTLET at the time.

Psst... there's a reason HGH was banned, therefore a reason his use was questioned.

You mean like those really responsible and ethical journalists at the Chronicle who ran the original story implicating Byrd as a cheater in the first place? Yes, bloggers are the problem

It's Paul Byrd. Let me know when Roger Clemens gets caught with it. Otherwise it isn't a story. In other news Joe Torre is picking his nose.....

Just like the real responsible, ethical reporters in the media who first reported this story, anonymous? Frickin Cleveland apologist. Wait... is there such a thing?

Didn't see your comment there, This Suit is Not Black. Great minds think alike!

Are we taking Paul Byrd's word for gospel? Just a thought, but isn't it always my doctor this, my trainer that?

Yeah... because "Jason" really brings you out of the shadows of the Internet. My name happens to be Jason, too. Does that make the point any more or less correct?

The only thing that the Chronicle did that even slightly shady or unethical was the timing of releasing their story, otherwise, they actually had these things that most people call "facts" and "information".

And taking Paul Byrd at his word? I don't trust any athlete who says that he is innocent, but again those pesky "facts" come up, and we learn that the police have even said they found records of prescriptions for Byrd and that no criminal charges are going to filed against him.

Wow was that so hard to try to tell the whole story instead of whatever you think suits your cause the best?

And by the way I live in Colorado, am formerly from Michigan, and hate just about anything coming out of the Armpit of America we so kindly call Ohio. I just don't like seeing people's names smeared by the modern-day sports paparazzi as was done here.

Thanks for your honesty buddy.

Do people seriously shoot themselves up with HGH for 2 1/2 years straight? Is that considered a healthy recovery?

Unknown said...

Has there ever been an athlete who was straight up honest with their use?

The last I remember, almost all the athletes who have been implicated in drug use aside from Matt Lawton have made some sort of excuse.

HGH is banned, plain and simple; thus, should have to be a plausible reason why he used it.

BTW, most cancer patients, tumors or otherwise do not use HGH in course of their treatment.

HGH can be prescribed legally by an Endocrinoligist. HGH is used when damage is done to the pituitary gland that doesn't allow the gland to secrete the HGH. It is not the most effective steroid for muscle hypertrophy. Someone in the media is digging up garbage on a good Dude....Peace Iron
