San Diego Padres manager Bud Black has decided to go with his gut rather than the by the books, and post his stud ace Jake Peavy for tonight's crucial series finale.
Peavy, coming off a 99-pitch scoreless performance, will take the hill against division foe Livan Hernandez of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are tied with the Pads for the NL West and Wild Card lead.
Hernandez (9-9, 4.67 ERA) is a career 21-21 vs. San Diego, with his last outing coming on August 27th where he pitched 7 innings for the loss, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
“I feel good," Peavy assured. "If you guys want to talk about three days' rest, I'm in.”The only other start Peavy pitched on short rest was in 2004, where he allowed just one run in six innings for the win. Teammate Greg Maddux, who called pitching out of rotation "a piece of cake," has gone 21-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 37 starts on fewer than five days off, so it's far from impossible, if only a little unorthodox.

No, it sure didn't.
AT LEAST HE TRIED.
Cole Hamels could take a few tips from Il Peavy.
