In a move which can only be described as total desperation, the San Diego Padres acquired Jason Lane from the Houston Astros on Monday for a player to be named or cash.Lane, if you weren't aware, kinda sucks at baseball. He was batting just .178 with eight homers and 27 RBIs in 68 games for the Astros this season, and is expected to fill some gaping holes during the final week of the Friars' season.
Actually, he doesn't suck that bad. He almost averaged .300 in 2002 and 2003. Anyway, Lane won't be eligible to participate in postseason play with the Padres since they acquired him after the Aug. 31st deadline.
After losing starting center fielder Mike Cameron to a torn thumb ligament and left fielder Milton Bradley to a hissyfit/Bud Black-induced torn ACL on Sunday -- right in the middle of a heated pennant race -- the club is in desperate need of a stable, hitting outfield.
They are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL Wild Card and are 3 long games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the West.
Related, the Pads may also bring up left-handed hitter Drew Macias and switch-hitting Chase Headley from the AA San Antonio Missions.
