San Diego Padres massive hurler, David Wells could be on his way out the door after what has turned out to be quite a tumultuous season.
Aside from the mid-July suspension, calling out the commissioner and constant frothing at the mouth, the 44-year-old Boomer gave up seven Cardinals runs Monday to raise his ERA to 14.04 over the past four games.
Manager Bud Black obviously wasn't pleased, but he didn't exactly say that Wells' time in San Diego was up, either. He simply stated that Wells will start five days from now.
Of course, the good folks at the Trib took that as a potential release for the burly left-hander.
Wells is 5-8 on the season with a 5.54 ERA in 22 starts. He's given up 17 homers, walked 33 and fanned 63 in just over 118 innings pitched.

Fat, drunk and devoid of ability is no way to go through life.
He's not going anywhere.
Unfortunately, it's not like the Padres have an ace AAA selection of starting pitchers to pick Wells' replacement. As a Padres masochist, I mean fan, his last starts follow a pattern. He can get through the first four innings and then he hits this massive wall and cannot get ANYONE out. Please see Monday's Babelicious Scoreboard for a replay.
For a team trying to make it in October, they can't have a hole like that in the rotation. The offense only awakens every fourth or fifth day. But I don't see any good alternatives.
I've never been a Wells fan, but especially not since he reneged on a verbal contract agreement with the Diamondbacks. That showed the character of Mr. Wells right there.
