Friday's Babelicious Scoreboard: Tigers @ Indians
Todd Jones blew his second straight save last night as the reeling Detroit Tigers (30-24) lost for the seventh time in eight games, falling 4.5 games behind the first-place division rival Cleveland Indians (34-19).
The Indians, 15-4 in the Central division, improved baseball's best home record to an outstanding 19-4, the best start in Cleveland's 107 years in the American League.
The Tigers led up until Victor Martinez's three-run shot - his second homer of the game - made it 11-10, sparking the five-run ninth inning. Jhonny Peralta followed with a double and Mike Rouse was thrown in to pinch-run.
After striking out Ryan Garko, Jones intentionally walked Trot Nixon, putting the winning run aboard. Tsk, tsk. Josh Barfield then lined a single to right that fell just in front of Magglio Ordonez, scoring Rouse to knot it up.
David Dellucci then lined a 2-1 pitch to center for the win.
Mike Maroth pitched six innings for the Tigers, giving up five runs on seven hits and walking two. Ordonez went 3-for-4 with an RBI - his league-leading 50th of the season - while Placido Polanco had a 4-for-5 night at the plate with 2 RBIs of his own.
Opposing pitcher Fausto Carmona tossed six innings as well, allowing five runs on ten hits with five K's. Garko and Peralta each went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs for the Tribe and Jason Michaels went 2-for-2, walking once and driving in two runs.
