We Can't Send Champagne Anymore?

A simple act of kindness and generosity has gotten Minnesota Twins gold glove center fielder Torii Hunter in some trouble with Major League Baseball.

Fulfilling a promise he made when the Kansas City Royals swept the Detroit Tigers last season to hand the Twins the AL Central Title, Hunter sent four bottles of champagne to Mike Sweeney's locker this weekend.

Apparently, Torri has violated MLB rule 21-b. Serious stuff. The rule states:
Any player or person connected with a Club who shall offer or give any gift or reward to a player or person connected with another Club for services rendered ... in defeating or attempting to defeat a competing Club ... shall be declared ineligible for not less than three years.
It might take a bit more than 4 bottles of Dom Perignon to bribe the Royals... since they're such a threat to the division.

The Twins received a phone call from the commissioner's office Monday, ordering the club to contact the Royals, who agreed to send all four unopened bottles back to Minnesota.

Twins GM Terry Ryan wasn't aware of the rule, either. "I'm to blame as much as anybody because I didn't know the rule," he said. Although a suspension for Hunter seems unlikely, he could still be fined. The Royals also could face penalties for accepting the gift.

The violation was first reported by The Cheater's Guide to Baseball blog, of course.

you know what the most awesome bit about this whole stupid thing is?
sweeney was calling hunter out at the beginning of the series for not sending the champagne in the first place.
i say if hunter goes, sweeney follows.

Hopefully he doesn't get into trouble. That would just be wrong.
