The Twins didn't even put a run on the board until the seventh inning - Michael Cuddyer's 21st longball (2 for 4) - and another on a Torii Hunter RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Jason Tyner and Luis Castillo each went 2 for 4 also, but it was just too little too late.Joe Mauer, who went 1 for 4 with 2 strikeouts Thursday night is now tied with Yankee Derek Jeter for the batting average lead in the American League, hitting .344. That, to me, is the worst news of the evening.
Scott Baker (4-8, 6.72 ERA) went five innings, and was rocky from the get-go. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits and struck out only two batters. First, Curtis Granderson (2 for 5) lead off the game with a home run (14). Then, after a Sean Casey single in the second, Marcus Thames (2 for 4) hit one to left center, bringing the score to 3-0. Detroit got two more in the fifth off a Craig Monroe single, and with Matt Guerrier (4IP, 3.04 ERA) on the mound in the seventh, Pudge's 11th home run on the year (2 for 5) brought the score to 6-1. They tacked another one on for good measure in the ninth with another home run, this time by Omar Infante (3 for 4).
Justin Verlander (16-7, 3.19 ERA) pitched seven good innings, allowing just 1 run on 8 hits, walking two and striking out five.
The Twins will look to even up the series Friday night with rookie Matt Garza (1-4, 5.88 ERA) on the hill against Wilfredo Ledezma (2-2, 2.38 ERA) and the Tigers in game two of this four game series at the Metrodome. Garza was recently voted this year's Minor League Pitcher of the Year, after cruising through all three levels of the system. Francisco Liriano won this award last year. The Twins sure know how to raise 'em, huh. With Thursday's loss, Minnesota falls to 5 games behind division leading Detroit and remain a half game in front of Chicago with their 9-1 loss to Cleveland.

I'll be quick too. The game sucked. Baker needed to step up majorly and he didn't. I mean a homerun on the second pitch of the game. Done. And Guerrier didn't have to allow more runs, really. But hey, we could have scored more. All I can do is thank God for the White Sox loss and hope that tomorrow we can pull out a win.
Ya know what I think? I think Baker is going straight to Wrigley. We still owe the Cubbies for Nevin, right?
Here's to tomorrow. *chug*
I'll sacrifice Baker. I donno...I mean I know personally sometimes it's hard to pitch well, and it gets frustrating. But I know how amazing our pitching coaches are and I just don't know what's up.
Well, nevermind. I just read that the Twins sent Adam Harben to Chciago. Looks like Baker will stay for now. I forgave him, anyway. But what is his deal? Is he just not ready to pitch at the major league level?
P.S. Welcome back Bert!!!
1. Bert still has suspensions to bear... 2. I was kind of wondering that too, is Baker just not ready? If that's the case, when will he be ready? He should be able to pitch at the major league level soon...if ever.
Ugh, that's right. I forgot they suspended him for a bunch more games. What I don't undrestand is that he can't work the Cleveland game some random date...like the 17th of September or something? What's up with that? That's kinda random. SO, no Bert til Monday. sad. Well, he's in our hearts! lol.
