Boston Red Sox Cling to One-Game Wild Card Lead
The Boston Red Sox are hanging on for dear life to their one-game lead in the American League Wild Card race.
Thanks to a Jacoby Ellsbury three-run shot with two out in the 14th inning, his Red Sox managed to beat the AL East champion New York Yankees 7-4 during Sunday's doubleheader nightcap after dropping the opener. The outfielder is batting .322 on the season with 31 homers and 103 RBI with 38 stolen bases as well. God, that's sexy.
Snapping a four-game skid, the Sox are heading into their final three games of the season against the Orioles at Camden Yards with a slim lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the Wild Card.
They held a 9 1/2-game lead a few weeks ago on September 4, but have gone 5-16 in the meantime and 6-18 throughout the month of September. To lighten the mood and perhaps for good luck, the team wore lingerie and costumes on their way to Baltimore, much like the St. Louis Cardinals did yesterday, but a bit more embarrassing. Maybe it's time for Tampa Bay to bust out the Rayhawks again...
The Rays will host the Yankees to polish off their season for three games beginning Monday night at 7:10pm ET. Who's your money on?
