Congratulations to Ervin Santana on pitching his first career no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday for a 3-1 Halos victory.
It wasn't pretty, but he struck out 10 and allowed only two base runners all day. Erick Aybar committed an error on the very first batter, totally screwing up the perfecto, but Santana walked Lonnie Chisenhall in the eighth anyways so I guess it wouldn't have mattered. He never did give up a hit, though. Pretty big deal.
This marks the first ever no-hitter at Progressive Field since it opened as Jacobs Field in 1994. Not only that, but it was the first solo no-hitter for the Los Angeles Angels since back in 1984 when Mike Witt tossed a perfect game against Texas.
Santana's was the third major league no-no this season, after Minnesota Twins lefty Francisco Liriano did it against the Chicago White Sox on May 3, four days before Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays.
Funny story. Santana made his big league debut on that very field on May 17, 2005. Unfortunately, he got his ass kicked. The first four batters he faced basically hit for the cycle: Grady Sizemore led off with a triple, Coco Crisp doubled, Travis Hafner singled and then Ben Broussard drove them all home with a grand slam.
