I was up way past my bedtime Wednesday night, watching the fantastic game between the Florida Marlins and San Francisco Giants, in which the Fish emerged victorious in the 12th inning when Scott Cousins scored the eventual winning run.
How he scored it, however, was disgustingly painful-looking. Not for him, but for poor Buster Posey, who we love more than words can be typed.
Cousins was booking ass around the horn after tagging up on an Emilio Bonifacio sacrifice fly, when he spotted the ball from right fielder Nate Schierholtz's laser rocket arm headed directly for him. So he did what any good base runner does: lowered his shoulder like a linebacker and clobbered the catcher in an effort to score the go-ahead run.
Unfortunately, Posey was brutally laid out, with his left leg hyper-extended and ankle twisted to the point of making me want to vomit: both for him and for my fantasy team, which is literally mangled beyond recognition at this point.
I'm no doctor, but it was pretty obvious Posey's leg was broken on impact, while news came this morning that he also suffered torn ligaments. Legs just don't bend that way. Cousins was all business regarding the clean hit at the plate, but sympathetic when it came to our boy's injury:
"I felt like he was blocking the dish. It’s the go-ahead run to win the game, I got to do whatever I can to score. I’m not trying to end anybody’s season or anything like that. I just was trying to play hard and score the go-ahead run. He didn’t say much and you could tell he was in pain... And when their manager, when Bruce came out, he was pretty frustrated. I didn’t want to make things any more tense. It’s a baseball play. I feel bad for Buster Posey, I really do... I’m going to send a message over there to them."
The reigning National League Rookie of the Year was batting .284 with four home runs and 21 RBI, and doing a darn good job calling games. Unfortunately, it looks like he's out for the remainder of the season. Brandon Belt and Chris Stewart have been called up from the AAA Fresno Grizzlies to take his place on the roster and behind the plate, respectively, with Darren Ford also landing on the disabled list Wednesday.
Get well soon, Buster. And if you know a Giants fan, hug them today.

Buster is the man and I really hope he can make it back soon.
Buster is indeed the man. Hopefully he'll be back in time for the Giants to make the playoffs, if they can do it without him!
I'm the ultimate Posey fan. Words cannot describe what I feel about this kid and what he's done for baseball. But the tweets were filled last night with contempt for Scott Cousins, who was just doing his job. Scott's compassion for Buster after the play was obvious and we all need to get past this. After all, Buster belongs to all of us.
Chris Stewart is a good catcher. His hitting is weaker than Posey, of course, but he'll do well!
Those kind of hits shouldn't even be legal!!
Having been a catcher in the low independent minors, I empathize with Buster. The risks the MLB catchers take are high, and I hate to see such an injury occur.
Hope he heals up as quickly as possible.
