And I Got Mad Hits Like I Was Rod Carew

Someone better call 9-1-1. Andre Ethier is on fire.

Usually, we don't get serious about hitting streaks until they reach 25 games. In fact, the last time we were this excited about a string of games with one hit after another was when we jinxed Scott Rolen during his 25-game streak back in July of 2009. That number is about where most streaks go to die.

At any rate, we're going to risk it again and dote on the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder. Although his team ending up losing to the Chicago Cubs 4-1 Tuesday, Ethier kept the streak alive during the fourth inning when he nailed a Ryan Dempster splitter just above a leaping Darwin Barney and into right field for the Dodgers' first hit of the game.

Apparently, it doesn't matter what bat he uses, either. Just one pitch earlier, Ethier took a huge cut and his bat went flying three rows behind the first base dugout. Instead of asking for the bat back from the fan who snatched it up, like the majority of hot-hitting superstitious players would do, Ethier grabbed a spankin' new C-271 black ash Louisville Slugger, which did the job just fine.

Ethier's streak marks the longest by a Dodger since Willie Davis hit in a franchise-record 31 straight games back in 1969. Of course, the longest hitting streak ever in the history of the game is still held by the legendary Joe DiMaggio, who managed to go 56 consecutive games with a hit.
