Brewers Add Takashi Saito to Bullpen
After acquiring Zack Greinke from the Kansas City Royals and Shaun Marcum from the Toronto Blue Jays this month, the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed relief pitcher Takashi Saito.
The 40-year-old Japanese righty was 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 56 appearances with the Atlanta Braves last season, adding to his 17-13 career record and 2.19 ERA spanning five major league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston and Atlanta.
Saito, who bats left-handed, also has 84 saves under his belt, including 81 for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006-2008. However, he's expected to be the setup man for Brewers closer John Axford.
Clearly, the Brew Crew realized it was time to make some significant changes to their pitching staff, but I'm not sure how Saito will improve the pen. He's older than dirt in pitching years and may still have shoulder issues. Then again, when he's healthy he's awesome.
