Third time's a charm.
The San Diego Padres clawed and scraped their way to the final game of the regular season, but were shut out 3-0 by the National League West-winning San Francisco Giants, who successfully avoided a Game 163 playoff.
Jonathan Sanchez pitched his team back into the postseason Sunday, tossing six fair innings while allowing five walks and three hits. He also provided a huge hit, nailing a triple off rookie Mat Latos and scoring the game’s first run in the third inning before Aubrey Huff followed with an RBI double.
Buster Posey also continued kicking ass, contributing a solo shot to help his team capture their first division title since 2003.
As Giants players took a victory lap along the warning track, the Padres hung their heads in disappointment along their dugout railing.
San Francisco will put ace Tim Lincecum on the hill for game one against the Wild Card-winning Atlanta Braves on Thursday at AT&T Park. Congratulations, Giants fans!

Thanks for the congrats Sooze. As one fan I have to mention the SF Giants played at home this season in front of over 3 Million fans, and we were rewarded with the NL West Division Championship. Not pretty at times, as we sat thru torture and triumph, but the Giants prevailed and now we get to do it some more! So thanks for the ride Giants! Fair weather fans we definitely are not!
