Don Wakamatsu Gets Canned

Don Wakamatsu has finally been fired.

The struggling Seattle Mariners let their manager go Monday after he managed to lead them to a god-awful 42-70 record more than halfway into the season -- marking the second-worst mark in the majors.

The Mariners, who were supposed to be pretty good this year, came into their game against the Oakland Athletics with their fifth manager in three years: Daren Brown. After managing the AAA Tacoma Rainiers for the last three seasons, Mr. Brown has taken over on an interim basis.

Along with Wakamatsu, general manager Jack Zduriencik also got rid of bench coach Ty Van Burkleo, pitching coach Rick Adair, and performance coach Steve Hecht. The GM had this to say during his pre-game press conference:
"The truth of the matter is, I lost confidence in Don, Ty and Rick... New leadership is needed and it is needed now."
Seattle forged an 85-77 record in Wakamatsu's first season, and went 127-147 since getting the job in November of 2008. Happy trails, Donny!

Do you think that when Wakamatsu hired a "performance coach", he'd be able to blame the team's bad performance on that guy and save his own skin?
