Shut Up Hanley Ramirez

We've made it pretty damn clear that we love Hanley Ramirez. However, we very much dislike smack-talking athletes who are already paid a million times more than we will ever see in our lifetime.

After the Florida Marlins All-Star shortstop botched a grounder Monday night which allowed two Arizona Diamondbacks runs to score when he accidentally kicked a ball into the outfield then jogged -- not hustled -- to pick it up, manager Fredi Gonzalez benched him for slacking.

That should have been the humble end of the story, but Ramirez decided to get lippy with reporters regarding his skipper's decision...
It's [Gonzalez's] team. He can do whatever. There's nothing I can do about it. We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls. They don't apologize. That's okay. He doesn't understand that, he never played in the big leagues. We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls. They don't apologize.
So we'll just say this: shut up and play baseball, Hanley Ramirez. You're a (really, really good) middle infielder... not a general manager, manager, bench coach, or physical trainer.

Besides, since this happened in Florida at the barren Sun Life Stadium, only about nine fans were in attendance, which means only four were actually paying attention while the other five were most likely concentrating on the two D'Backs rounding third base due to Hanley's lolly gagging.

Anyways, let's lighten the mood...

I love that commercial!

As far as Hanley, my advice to him is this: if your boss/supervisor/manager tells you that you need to improve your performance in some area, especially if he takes you off an assignment due to it, perhaps you should re-examine your performance on those tasks and make an adjustment - the same as all the rest of us working (sometimes) stiffs have to in order to keep our jobs.

It makes me pissy too when millionaires whine about their jobs when their job is to play a kid's game.

If most of us talked about our boss that way, we'd be collecting unemployment and looking for another job by now. Why should Ramirez be treated any different?

I would either keep him benched until he apologized to the team, Gonzalez, the Florida Marlins front office, and the fans; or send him down to the minor leagues for a while; or bundle him as part of a trade for another shortstop with equal talent or the potential to be equally talented.

And if he was indeed having trouble with his hustle due to being smacked in the leg by a ball, he should have told Gonzalez about it.

By the way, the "Sunday Night Baseball" commercial with Ramirez and Man Muscles is cute.

This part was said by Gonzalez: "I played six years in the minor leagues and I know what it takes to play this game and I know the effort it takes to play this game."

Totally agree with Shannon. It's so disrespectful to treat a manager like that. I think the players union probably has some deal that prevents teams from dumping a player for these type of things.

Whoa! Thanks anonymous. Not sure how that entire paragraph quoting Gonzalez got deleted, but it's fixed.
