Cards' April Comes Out of Left Field

Whoa, go Cards."Wow" is the first word that comes to mind when watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball this month. "Really?" is also right up there.

You can go ahead and mark this month down as the best the Cardinals have seen since World War II. They haven't been this hot in April since 1944, so maybe your parents or grandparents... or possibly your great grand parents for all you youngsters out there (stay in school)... recall those days.

They've been playing some darn good baseball so far this season, enjoying a 17-7 start. Friday night's 6-2 victory over the 5-17 Washington Nationals, who seem to be good at nothing but blowing it, was no different.

Righty Todd Wellemeyer (2-2, 5.28 ERA) was on the hill for the Cards last night, allowing just two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three. He got a nice offensive show to work with too, seeing Albert Pujols, Ryan Ludwick, and Chris Duncan all going yard off 22-year-old rookie Jordan Zimmermann.

Zimm, after two shiny wins for the Nats in his debut season, ended up allowing a total of five runs on eight hits with six K's over 5.2 innings. Welcome to the big leagues, little guy.

As a life-long Cards fan, I will say, in my very unbiased opinion, that Albert Pujols is the best player in baseball. I know that's going out on quite a limb, but someoe had to say it...
