It's official. Barring some freak accident or unexpected release, Gary Sheffield will hit #500 as a New York Met.
Just one dinger shy of one the most impressive milestones in baseball -- and three-days released from the Detroit Tigers -- Sheffield and the Mets reached an agreement on Friday. He will become just the 25th player in big league history to join the 500 Home Run Club, the most recent being Manny Ramirez in May of last season.
At 40 years old, Sheffield will give New York a right-handed, power-hitting bat, but what defensive role will he play? The Mets' corner outfield is pretty much set with Daniel Murphy in left and Ryan Church in right —- both left-handed hitters.
Sorry Church. Looks like Sheff will be stealing some of your playing time in right field, most likely on days when facing left-handed pitchers.
Let the Homer Watch begin.

That pic is scary. As far as the news goes, I think this is a good fit for Sheffield. Mainly because he didn't become a Phillie. :)
