Gary Sheffield Hits #500

Gary Sheffield has finally done it.

The old school right fielder hit two milestones Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at the New York Mets new Citi Field: his first home run as a Met, and the 500th of his career. Victoriously rounding the bases to a standing ovation after tying the game with his bomb off lefty reliever Mitch Stetter, he was greeted with high fives and hugs from his new teammates.

Sheff, the 25th player in big league history to join the 500 home run club, expressed his appreciation in a postgame press conference.
"I was so excited that, you know, when I looked over to the dugout, those were the guys," he said. "I appreciate every one of those guys. They’ve been very special to me."
*warm fuzzies*

The 40-year-old, nine-time All-Star, who was at the plate as a pinch hitter, sent the full-count pitch sailing 385 feet for his first hit of the season. The ball (traded for signed jerseys) was caught by a 22-year-old Mets fan from Suffern, New York named Chris Matcovich. He was wearing a Keith Hernandez jersey. To my knowledge, the young man does not rock a mustache.

I am happy for Sheffield. Like him or not he has always been a consistent hitter and his homerun numbers didn't jump in the Roids era. Though I wonder when Sheffield goes in the hall of fame with team he will claim.
