Selection Sunday: That's Our Funday

Jason Giambi: not an All-Star

With 25 newcomers to the All-Star game this season, it should be a fun show July 15th at Yankee Stadium. But maybe not as fun as this show, if you're down for tight-rolling your jeans, ratting your bangs, and pulling on some snug pleather pants. (awesome)

Yukon YoukilisOne thing hasn't changed though, and that is the popularity of the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels. Four Sox and two Yanks will highlight the starting American League roster: Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter for New York, and Kevin Youkilis, Manny Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz -- who apparently no one realized is broken and will not play -- will represent Beantown.

Jonathan Papelbon and Mariano Rivera were each selected to pitch for Sox manager Terry Francona with three Halos in Francisco Rodriguez, Joe Saunders and Ervin "Magic" Santana.

As for those who do not call the East Coast home: Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Mariners center fielder Ichiro Suzuki and Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton (reformed outfielder and future Comeback Player of the Year) will also start for the AL.

Roto SotoOnto the National League, where there are some pretty slim pickins', unless you play for the Chicago Cubs, who nailed three starters, three pitchers and one bench-warmer: 22% of the team. Rookies Geovany Soto and Kosuke Fukudome will start along with Alfonso Soriano, while Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood get pitching honors for the Cubbies.

Chipper Jones was a no-brainer at third and the other hard-hitting NL switch-hitter Lance Berkman was a shoo-in at first. His Astros teammate Miguel Tejada was called on as a reserve. Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who is batting .304 with 21 homers and 43 RBI this year, gets to start up the middle with Phillies sensation Chase Utley, who we recently put under our voodoo microscope.

Also, Cristian Guzman is totally an All-Star. Let that one sink in.

For a complete list of reserves (there are a few more Red Sox players smashed in there) check out MLB.com and make your final vote count. (Pat Burrell and Jermaine Dye)

Thanks for the link (WSBGM's), but we changed the "Vote For Burrell" post up a bit and added it to the bottom of today's post- http://pabaseball.blogspot.com/2008/07/hit-rat-but-beat-by-tat.html

Aaron Cook plays for the Rockies. Also worth noting that Derrek Lee didn't even make the team. Go Cubbies!

Why should Lee have been chosen over Berkman?

Lee: .306, 15 HR, 53 RBI

Berkman: .349, 22 HR, 69 RBI (also a switch-hitter who's stolen 12 bags)

The point was that Derrek Lee has been the Cubs perennial All-Star for the past few years and the team has managed to put 7 guys in the game without him. It has nothing to do with Berkman, merely commenting on the fact that the Cubs are good overall this year. Also, let's acknowledge the fact that All Stars are not necessarily chosen based on who has the best stat line anyway. Kinda like prom court in that way.

Agreed Gretchen, it's strange he wasn't voted in by the fans. It is, afterall, a popularity contest.

You don't think fans pay attention to stats? Great stats (putting these players on SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight night after night) is a big part of making them popuilar enough to get voted onto the AS team. You want to talk about someone getting snubbed, let's talk about Jermaine Dye of the White Sox.

Again, I'm not saying Derrek Lee got snubbed. When there are a lot of good NL first basemen, that's what happens. My team's off to the best start in 100 years, so you'll find no complaints here. And, yeah, Manny over Jermaine? I wouldn't agree with that at all, incidentally.

I'm trying not to be excited for your Cubs (as a Mets fan) but as a baseball fan, it's good for the game (as are the Rays). As far as Dye goes, it makes even less sense with the AL's DH not even being healthy enough to play.

I *LOVE* the All Star game. Twins Ladies (and guys), congrats on you selections. Joe Mauer really was a no-brainer this year. He truly is a hot tamale.

I will miss Magglio at the game this year. What is the deal with Big Papi being on the list, that's kind of silly. Does the All Star team really need a DL?

Also, three more words that make the All Star game fun: "Manny Being Manny."

He plays, for keeps, cuz he might not make it back.

HAHA.

And where, o' where, was Evan Longoria on the All-Star roster?? I must've just missed his name...he's on there, right? (sarcasm)

Yay Kaz! Yay Ludwick! Yay Navi!

*has voted for Longoria now upwards of 100 times*
