After Frank Thomas voiced his displeasure with the Toronto Blue Jays for benching him in favor of the left-fielding DH Matt Stairs, the club has released the 39-year-old designated hitter.
This move may have something to do with The Big Hurt being, well, hurt a lot, old, grumpy and kinda sucking at baseball these days. Thomas was batting .167 over the first 16 games of the season, with three homers but a decent number of RBIs at 11.
After being (permanently) benched Saturday, the 19-year veteran claimed foul as he thinks the Jays were attempting to limit his at bats so he wouldn't reach the 304 plate appearances he needed to guarantee his $10 million option for next season.
But of course, Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi denied the allegations that the Big Hurt's contract options had any bearing on his decision.
Shady.

Someone will sign him. He'll make a decent DH and/or bench player.
A half-dozen or so women just got very, very nervous and considered opening the classified ads section of their Sunday paper for the first time in years.
First of all, I just stumbled across your site last week. You ladies crack me up! In just a few days you've turned into my favorite baseball blog! Keep it up!
Secondly, I hope Frank finds a home soon. I'd like to see him on my Cardinals, but he'd be on the bench with Albert at 1st. I'd say that leaves them out of the Big Hurt Sweepstakes, since the bench is what hurt his feelings in Toronto in the first place.
Andrew Weaver! I was just instantly addicted to your site after a mere 10 minutes. I love it, in fact. Keep up the great work, and thanks for the kind words! Also, keep taking pictures!
Ricciardi is calling Thomas's departure "mutual" now but I call total bullshit on that one.
