The Houston Astros finalized their $16.5 million, three-year deal with second baseman Kazuo Matsui Sunday, just over a month after he aided the Colorado Rockies in their first ever trip to the World Series.
The 32-year-old switch-hitter, who will likely bat second for the Houston, hit .288 with four longballs and 37 RBIs last season, swiping 32 bags and scoring 84 runs -- all career bests.
In other Astros offseason news, the club offered arbitration to free agents Trever Miller and Mark Loretta, who have until this Friday to accept their respective offers. If either decline and sign with another club, the 'Stros would be up for a compensatory draft choice between the first and second rounds of the June 2008 draft for each man.The 34-year-old Miller posted a 4.86 ERA with one save in 76 relief appearances for the Astros this season while the 36-year-old Loretta hit .287 with four homers and 41 RBIs over 133 games.
Houston declined to offer arbitration to starting pitcher Jason Jennings, infielder Mike Lamb, right-handed reliever Brian Moehler and pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro.
