It was vintage Tom Glavine night at Wrigley Field, as the veteran lefty mixed pitches and made a fool of Chicago Cubs hitters to earn his 300th career victory.
And who drove in the first New York Mets run? Forty-one-year-old Glavine, right up the middle.
He pitched 6.1 good innings of baseball, allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Glavine is 10-6 with a 4.31 ERA this season, which will most likely be his last. To go along with his 300 career victories, he has 2,544 Ks, 25 shutouts and 56 complete games.
Carlos Delgado put up 4 RBIs behind Glavine along with Shawn Green, Paul Lo Duca and Jose Reyes, who each drove in one run.Reyes, of course, stole another bag for his 53rd of the season. Ridiculous. Newcomer Luis Castillo, who left in the eighth with heat exhaustion, had 4 of New York's 16 hits.
Chicago starter Jason Marquis (8-7, 4.39 ERA) never even gave the Cubbies a chance. He lasted only 5.1 innings and surrendered 5 runs and 9 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout.
The Cubs were scoreless until the sixth when Aramis Ramirez drove in a run with a double to deep center. In the next inning, Angel Pagan scored on a Jacque Jones groundout and a Mike Fontenot double scored the third and final run for Chicago.
There was a good news/bad news scenario for the Cubs in this game, as well.
The good news: Papier-mâché hurler Kerry Wood made his comeback appearance with a scoreless inning of relief, the righty's first with the Cubs since June 6th of last season.
The bad news: All-star left fielder and leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano strained his right quad in the third inning while rounding the bases and is looking at sitting 2-4 weeks. This comes as a huge blow to a Cubs team looking to make a playoff push in the last months of the season.

Congrats Tommy Glavine!
Whoa, it just dawned on me that maybe Denis Leary's Rescue Me character Tommy Gavin is some sort of spinoff of that name? Or just a coincidence.
I've hardly followed Glavine's career other than he pitched for the Braves for a long time. He has had a good career and no scandals. That's what I like to see from a player.
