Houston Astros Clean House, Can Phil Garner

Two years after earning their first National League pennant, the Houston Astros have fired their manager. And their general manager.

Phil Garner and GM Tim Purpura were canned Monday by club owner Drayton McLane, who said the franchise "needed a fresh start."

McLane went on to say he felt the team "needed new direction, invigoration, to play with more enthusiasm and play more like a champion."

Bench coach Cecil Cooper -- who has no big league managerial experience, but plenty of time spent on the field -- will be interim manager along with team president Tal Smith, who is older than dirt and will serve as interim general manager.

There are 31 games left in Houston's season, with a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals starting Tuesday. After losing five of their last seven home games, the Astros are sitting at 58-73 on the season, a whopping nine games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs.

I would cry if Gardy got fired.

He won't get fired though - he's not the problem. So not to worry.

What the hell IS the problem?! I'm definitely not saying it's Gardy. I mean, he pencils the guys in and puts them out there - he can only do so much ya know. But for real. We need another bat. A really, really BIG ONE.
