Drillers Coach Coolbaugh Killed By Foul Ball

In a lethal freak accident Sunday, Double-A Tulsa Drillers hitting coach, 35-year-old Mike Coolbaugh died after being struck in the head by a foul ball.

In the top half of the ninth inning against the Arkansas Travelers, Coolbaugh was coaching first base when he was hit in foul territory by a line drive off the bat of Tulsa designated hitter Tino Sanchez.

Coolbaugh, who had taken over as the Drillers' hitting coach just 3 weeks ago, reportedly never regained consciousness and was not breathing when paramedics began administering CPR on the field when they arrived 15 minutes later.

During a 17-year baseball career which was spent primarily in the minors, he appeared in 39 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2001 and five games for the St. Louis Cardinals the following year.

Mike Coolbaugh is survived by his wife, Mandy, and two young sons, Joseph and Jacob.

I guess if your number is up, it's not a bad way to go, really.

Very sad for his family, though.
