May's pitcher of the Month, Dan Haren (1.70 ERA) struck out nine over 7.2 innings of four-hit baseball, allowing 2 earned runs and walking one, but Santiago Casilla got the decision with a one-hit inning.

Julian Tavarez (5.33 ERA) tossed 5.2 innings for the Boston Red Sox, serving up three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Mark Ellis (4-for-5) became the sixth Oakland Athletics player to hit for the cycle when he lined a two-run triple in the second, a solo shot in the fourth and a double in the sixth. Having three separate opportunities to complete it, he finally blooped a broken-bat single in the 10th inning.

David Ortiz hit his first homer in 19 games and added doubles in the ninth and 10th innings for Boston and Wily Mo Pena went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. He and pinch-hitter Jason Varitek hit the RBI singles that tied it up in the ninth.

Eric Chavez, who went 2-for-5, hit the two-out, walkoff home run that ended the 11-inning contest.
