Wednesday's Babelicious Scoreboard

After patiently waiting three weeks for his first win, left-hander Jarrod Washburn (1-2, 2.96 ERA) pitched a three-hitter for his third career shutout, outdueling righty Joe Blanton (2-1, 3.55 ERA) to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Oakland Athletics, 2-0 Wednesday night.

Washburn struck out two, walked two and retired 15 of the last 18 batters in his first complete game since a rain-delayed, five-inning blanking of the Kansas City Royals when as an Angel in 2005. His only other shutout came against the Chicago White Sox in July of 2004.

Blanton allowed six hits for Oakland but gave up homers to Jose Guillen and Kenji Johjima. Blanton struck out six and threw 105 pitches - just one more than Washburn - in a game that lasted just one hour and 47 minutes, the fastest nine-inning game for the A's since 1979.

The Mariners are 3-1 against the A's this season, finally ending their 10-game losing streak in Oakland.
