Remembering Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was more than just a baseball player. He was a legend - a brave soldier in the fight for black players to be treated as equals in the game of baseball and in life.

It was 1947 - only 60 years ago - that Jackie suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers' Opening Day, as the first black man to play in a major league baseball game.

Find out which players will be wearing #42 today, honoring the great Jackie Robinson over at Random Thoughts.

Players like Chi Chi Sabathia and Torri Hunter should be proud of all the players who want to wear #42 today...

This isn't a black thing....its a day for everyone to celebrate a great man...

Funny Jesse or Al weren't out there protesting if a white player wears #42...

I agree that it's not a black thing. I'd like to defend Torii's statement, but I'm not sure exactly what he was getting at. Maybe he feared it would be a bandwagon type of thing or that the day would be cheapened by the hoopla? I don't know. I'm glad to see a lot of players participate.

P.S. It blows me away that it was ONLY 60 YEARS AGO that white people in our country were still so publicly intolerant of other races. I'm glad things have changed, but we still have a long way to go (hence the Don Imus fiasco, etc etc)
