Nolasco Out, Vanden Hurk In

Florida Marlins righty Ricky Nolasco landed on the disabled list Monday with elbow inflammation, and will be replaced by Rick Vanden Hurk, a young Holland native who has never pitched above the Class-A level.

Nolasco is expected to miss only a couple of starts, since his DL placement is retroactive to Saturday. He made his only appearance of the season Friday, when he pitched 1.1 innings of relief, giving up a three-run shot to Philadelphia's Pat Burrell. Nolasco was 11-11 with a 4.82 ERA as a rookie Marlin last season.

Vanden Hurk, 21, was called up from the minors to make his big league debut Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was on the Double-A Carolina Mudcats roster this season, but hadn't pitched yet. The 6'5" righty is 5-12 with a 3.47 ERA in four minor league seasons, spending last year with the Gulf Coast League Marlins and Class-A Jupiter.

Vanden Hurk's family plans to fly in from Holland to see him pitch.

The Marlins were already sans right-hander Josh Johnson, who will likely be out until at least June with an irritated ulnar nerve.
