Pettitte Returns To Mound For Yankees

The New York Yankees' bringing back Andy Pettitte (possibly to lure Roger Clemens away from Houston) is supposed to help them get to the postseason. It's a pretty good plan, since he has helped them win four World Series titles.

Pettitte will make his first start for New York since Game 6 of the 2003 World Series (which they lost) when he faces the Devil Rays at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the day after a postponement due to rain.

Pettitte was 149-78 with a 3.94 ERA during his first nine seasons with the Bronx Bombers and in 2005 with the Astros, went 17-9 with a 2.39 ERA. The Astros advanced to the World Series that year where they were swept by the Chicago White Sox in a freak baseball-related incident. Last season, Pettitte went 14-13 with a 4.20 ERA in 36 appearances in Houston.

On the other side of the ball, Jae Seo will get the start for the Rays. The righty struggled through 17 games last season going 1-8 with a 5.00 ERA after leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers in late June.

Seo is 1-3 with a 7.82 ERA in five starts against the Yankees, while Pettitte is clearly more dominant with an 11-1 record and 3.14 ERA in 17 appearances against Tampa Bay.
