Ryan Freel is expected to start the season in center field, since Griffey is still nursing a broken left hand that he injured while wrestling with his kids on a yacht this offseason.
Griffey, a 10-time Gold Glove winner in center, has taken fly balls and made throws from right field in practice. Last season, the 18-year veteran hit .252 with 27 homers and 72 RBIs in 109 games with the Reds, where he has played for the past seven seasons.
