The Washington Nationals have signed a one-year agreement with the Tabasco Olmecas (of the Mexican Summer League), the Nationals' first working deal with an international club. The agreement states that the Nats will be granted access to the Olmecas' scouting network and information, which is based primarily in Mexico and Latin America. It also calls for a coaching exchange where both clubs make visits to the other club's Spring Training camp.
In the history of baseball, 101 big leaguers are Mexican natives, including left-handed pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, former Nationals righty Esteban Loaiza and retired third baseman Vinny Castilla.
The government-owned Olmecas play in Villahermosa, the capital city of the state of Tabasco.
