Jack Wilson, Matt Kata Smash Melons

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson was hospitalized overnight after a head-to-head collision with second baseman Matt Kata dropped him to the ground in the sixth inning of the Bucs' 7-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Both infielders were trying to field So Taguchi's RBI grounder up the middle when they banged heads. Wilson fell motionless to the ground after banging the left side of his head with the right side of Kata's.

He was eventually able to sit up on his own, but was hauled onto the back of a cart by Pirates trainers. He received an immediate ovation from the stunned crowd as he was driven off the field and moved to an ambulance, which took him to a nearby hospital.

Wilson was aware of his surroundings once he reached the hospital, but there's been no word on his status since.
