Alex Rodriguez Fastest to Homer Lucky No. 13
And fourteen.
Alex Rodriguez became the first player in big league history to hit 13 homers in the first 18 games of a season, smoking a 2-2 pitch into the left field stands off Casey Fossum in the second inning Monday night against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a game which the Yankees lost, 10-8.
Then, the third baseman became the fastest player to fourteen longballs ever in the history of the game when he nailed a two-run shot to left in the top of the ninth off Al Reyes.
The second home run tied the major league record set by Albert Pujols in 2006 for dingers in the month of April. Rodriguez is the first Yankee to have 14 homers and 34 RBIs in any given calendar month, in addition to Roger Maris hitting 13 of them in July of 1961.
Update: Sammy Sosa holds the record for most home runs in a month with 20, coming in June of (when else?) 1998.

Last year they were talking about Pujols breaking Maris' old record before he lost time to injury. ARod is bound to cool off, but it's not inconceivable for him to finish April with 15 home runs. If he hit just 10 homers each month for the rest of the season, he would easily pass Maris as the Yankee with the most HR in a season. I believe he would also hold the AL record.
He's on pace to do absolutely amazing stuff this season.
I was there...at work
You work so hard, Andrew.
;)
Not to nitpick, but A-Rod broke the April home run record. The record for most home runs in any month is Sammy Sosa with 20.
No, no. If anyone's gonna nitpick on A-Rod it'll be someone from River Ave. Blues or no one at all.
I could have sworn there was something about Sosa in that post when I wrote it. Ah... late night blogging.
